Stand at the edge of a courtyard and count the joints.
The fewer you see, the larger and calmer the space feels. That is the quiet promise of flagstone paving. One wide, steady surface where smaller units would draw a busy grid.
Flagstones are large-format concrete slabs. Ours start at 600 x 600 mm and go up to 600 x 900 mm. They bring the expanse of natural stone to patios, plazas and entrances, with the consistency only a factory can give.
Here's what sets a flagstone apart, how we make them, and how to pick the right one for your space.
What Makes a Flagstone a Flagstone
Think of a flagstone as a paving tile, only much larger.
Like a paving tile, it is set in concrete. Unlike a paver, it does not lock into its neighbours to form a surface. Each flagstone holds its own, through its mass and the bed beneath it.
| Pavers | Paving tiles | Flagstones | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical size | Smaller units, often around 200 x 100 mm | Around 400 x 400 mm | 600 x 600, 600 x 750 or 600 x 900 mm |
| Thickness | 60 mm to 100 mm and above | Around 38 mm | 65, 80, 100 or 150 mm |
| Laid on | Compacted sand bed | Concrete bed | Concrete bed or a pedestal system |
| How it holds | Interlocks with neighbouring units | Bonded to the base | Bonded to the base, or rests on pedestals |
| Best for | Driveways, roads, heavy traffic | Light traffic, height-restricted areas | Walkways, patios, plazas, slow vehicle movement |
Why is a flagstone thicker than a tile? A large face needs more depth to stay stable. A 100 mm paver has a small face and shares its load with the interlocking units around it. A flagstone works alone across a face of up to 600 x 900 mm, so its thickness balances its size.
What a Large Format Does to a Space
Joints are where the eye stops. Fewer joints let it travel.
That's why flagstones are the go-to for spaces meant to feel open and composed: entrance courts, plazas, patios and the marquee areas of a landscape. A 600 x 900 mm flagstone covers the same ground as many small units, and the surface reads as one.
There are two ways to lay them, and each creates a different mood:
- Flush, in a grid. Flagstones sit tight against each other for a continuous, seamless floor.
- Spaced apart. Gaps are filled with pebble chips, jelly stones or grass, so the layout breathes and blends into the garden around it.

Flagstones of a similar size and shape can also be combined. A plain Shot Blasted flagstone pairs easily with any of the textured ones. With patterned designs like Deck Board, alignment matters: our team can advise you on how to lay each flag so the pattern flows into the next.
How We Make Them: Vacuum-Dewatered Wet Pressing
A slab this large has to be dense all the way through. That comes down to how it's made.
In 2005, we introduced vacuum-dewatered wet press technology to India, importing the machinery from the UK's Forest Press Hydraulics. In 2017, we added a three-station vacuum-dewatered wet press from the UK's Wil El Mil Engineering to make kerbs, flags and water channels at scale.
What the process does. Concrete needs water to mix and flow into a mould. Water left behind after pressing makes the finished slab less dense. In a vacuum-dewatered wet press, the mix is pressed into shape and the excess water is drawn out.
The result:
- Higher density
- Greater compressive strength
- Better load-bearing capacity and long-term durability
Every flagstone in our range is made this way.
Concrete Flagstones vs Natural Stone
Natural stone is beautiful. Every slab is one of a kind. On a large project, that is also its biggest challenge.
Size and thickness. Quarried slabs vary from one to the next and often need cutting and calibrating on site. Our flagstones come in three fixed formats and four fixed thicknesses. Every unit matches the last.
Colour. Stone shifts in colour between blocks and quarries. Our flagstones are coloured in the mix under controlled factory conditions, for a far more even result across a large area. Choose from our full palette of solid and blended colours.
Grip. Some natural stones turn slippery when wet, especially once polished. Our selection of raised textures provide grip, and are pressed into the surface itself, from Pimple dots to Rugged pitting.
Strength. Vacuum dewatering gives every flagstone the same dense, predictable build. There are no hidden veins or fissures to worry about.
The look. You don't have to give up the character of stone. Riven recreates hewn stone. Rugged recreates hammered stone. Teak and Deck Board bring in the warmth of timber.
Budgeting. Natural stone prices move with quarry supply, transport and demand. Concrete flagstones are made in our own factories, so pricing tends to stay steadier and easier to plan around. Fixed sizes also mean less cutting and wastage on site.
If a design wants the one-off variation of quarried stone, natural stone remains the right call. If it wants a consistent surface across a large area, concrete flagstones are hard to beat.
Eight Flagstones, Eight Characters
All of our flagstones come in the same three formats (600 x 600, 600 x 750 and 600 x 900 mm) and four thicknesses (65, 80, 100 and 150 mm). What changes is the surface.
| Flagstone | Surface | Standard texture | Popular colours | Works best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pimple | Fine, evenly spaced dots | Pimple | Grey | Understated spaces with regular footfall |
| Riven | Irregular, stone-like undulations | Riven | Terracotta, Black, Grey, Red | Nature-inspired spaces |
| Bar Faced | Staggered, slender ridges | Fine | Black, Grey | Linear designs and pavements |
| Shot Blasted | Plain, with a granular grip | Shot-blasted | Black, Grey, Yellow, Red | Minimal schemes, pairing with other flags |
| Teak | Wood-grain ridges and grooves | Fine | Ivory, Brown | Green spaces and pool decks |
| Deck Board | Angular, abstract ridges | Fine | Ivory, Brown, Chocolate, Black, Grey | Entrances and marquee spaces |
| Rugged | Pitted, like hammered stone | Shot-blasted | Brown, Chocolate, Black, Grey, Yellow | Organic, earthy themes |
The eighth flagstone works differently. Our Storm-Water Flags are reinforced with steel and carry two rows of circular openings, so large volumes of water can flow into the drain below. Their load capacity can be engineered to the needs of your site. In a neutral grey with a pimple texture, they sit in line with the rest of the paving and keep the surface looking continuous.

Traffic, Thickness and Installation
Flagstones are rated for light traffic. In practice, that means:
- Foot traffic: walkways, patios, courtyards and plazas
- Slow vehicle movement: cars driving in and out at very low speeds, at a porch or a drop-off point
What flagstones are not for: roads and driving lanes. A surface that carries regular moving traffic is better built with interlocking pavers, and our paver size and thickness guide covers how to choose them.
Picking a thickness. All eight flagstones come in 65, 80, 100 and 150 mm. The right one depends on the format you choose and how the space will be used. Share both with us and we'll recommend the thickness that suits your site.
Two ways to install.
- On a concrete bed. The standard method. Each flagstone is set in concrete over a prepared base, for a firm, permanent surface.
- On a pedestal system. Adjustable stands sit under the corners of each flagstone and raise it above the slab. Pipes and wires run underneath, and any flag can be lifted for access. This is how a cluttered rooftop becomes a usable terrace, as we explain in What Actually Suits a Terrace.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a flagstone and a paving tile?
Size. A flagstone is a much larger concrete slab, from 600 x 600 mm up to 600 x 900 mm and 65 to 150 mm thick, while a paving tile is typically around 400 x 400 mm and 38 mm thick. Both are set in concrete, and flagstones can also be installed on a pedestal system.
What is the largest flagstone size available?
Our largest flagstone is 600 x 900 mm (Rectangle XL). Every flagstone in the range comes in 600 x 600, 600 x 750 and 600 x 900 mm, in thicknesses of 65, 80, 100 or 150 mm.
Can cars drive on concrete flagstones?
Only at very low speeds. Flagstones handle foot traffic and cars pulling in and out of a porch or drop-off. They are not meant for roads or driving lanes, because they are set in concrete rather than interlocking like pavers.
Are concrete flagstones as durable as natural stone?
Yes, and more predictable. Our flagstones are vacuum dewatered for higher density and compressive strength, and every unit is made to the same specification, without the hidden veins or fissures natural stone can carry.
Are concrete flagstones cheaper than natural stone?
It depends on the stone and the project, but concrete flagstones are usually easier to budget for. Natural stone prices move with quarry supply and transport, while factory-made concrete stays steadier, and fixed sizes cut down on-site wastage. Request a quote for a figure that fits your project.
What does vacuum-dewatered mean?
It means excess water is drawn out of the concrete while it is pressed into shape. Less trapped water gives a denser slab with higher compressive strength and better long-term durability.
Can flagstones be laid with grass or pebbles between them?
Yes. Flagstones can be laid flush for a continuous surface, or spaced apart with grass, pebble chips or jelly stones for a softer layout that blends into the landscape.
What is the difference between a Stormwater flagstone and a precast drainage slab?
Both manage surface water, but they are made by different processes. A precast drainage slab can be fully customised to your specifications.
Flagstones earn their place wherever a space should feel open and composed. See how they work alongside other paving on footpaths and plazas, and on terraces and rooftops with the pedestal system.
